**I own a starter model drumkit, would it improve the sound of the drums if I changed the drum heads?

If the heads fitted are the original ones supplied with the kit, the answer is most definately YES!

Which ones should I choose? There seems to be a massive choice of different models.

Before I answer this one, can I say that the heads I will be suggesting are all made by REMO. This is not necessarily because I think that REMO are the best, though they are excellent, but simply because they are the only make that I have extensive experience with. Other manufacturers who are highly thought of include EVANS and AQUARIAN who will have eqivilent models to the ones I will mention.
Now to answer the question. For a "starter model" kit, my choice would be REMO PINSTRIPE CLEAR heads for the batter side of tom toms, and REMO POWERSTROKE 3 COATED heads for both the bass drum and snare drum, batter sides.

** Which is the batter side?

The batter side is the side that you hit and the response head is the other side of the drum.

** Do I need to change the response heads?

No, not unless they are damaged. If they do need to be changed use a REMO AMBASSADOR CLEAR head on tom toms and a REMO POWERSTROKE 3 black display head on the bass drum.

** Does that include the response head of a snare drum?

Most certainly not. If you need to replace the response head of a snare drum you must buy a special SNARE RESPONSE head. It is a very thin head which, incidentally, should never be struck with a drumstick.

** My snare drum has a very "ringy" sound when I hit it. Can I get rid of that ring?

Yes, buy an "O" ring, this sits on top of the batter head and will take the "ringy" sound away. They are not expensive, about two or three pounds.

** If you just recommend these models of heads, why are there so many other different ones available as well?

Well, all of the different models available WILL make the drums sound slightly different to each other BUT, you usually need a lot of drumming experience to hear it for yourself. The variety of drum shell materials used ie Birch, Maple, or Oak will respond in different ways to the different heads, so a lot of personal preferences come into play.
For instance, when I owned a PEARL drum kit with BIRCH wood shells, I liked to use REMO PINSTRIPE heads, but on my PREMIER SIGNIA MAPLE wood drumkit, the pinstripes sounded awful. The SIGNIA worked brilliantly with REMO AMBASSADOR heads instead.

On a starter kit you really do not need to worry about all of this.
