** I would like to get some drumming lessons but how do I find a local teacher? If you attend a school you could ask the Head of Music if they know of anyone. It may be possible that lessons are available at your school.
You could enquire at local music shops or ask other drummers if they can recommend anyone.
Your local Citizens Advice office may know who the local Musicians Union secretary is. The M.U. secretary will know if any of his/her local members are drumming teachers.
A few teachers advertise in RHYTHM and DRUMMER magazine (available via your newsagent) maybe one of those is local to you.Libraries sometimes hold lists of music teachers and record shops sometimes have notice boards with music teachers advertising. There is also the internet of course.
**How do I know if the teacher is any good?
This can be a tricky question because sometimes one pupil may feel well suited and enjoy a teachers particular style and another person will not and consequently would not rate that teacher very highly. As the saying goes,"one mans meat is another mans poison".
However, there are lots of things to look out for.
A. Firstly, you have to realise that ANYBODY can call themselves a drumming teacher and offer lessons. They need to have no particular level of experience or qualifications in order to offer to teach. So, the first thing to do is to eliminate any teachers who are so young that they cannot possibly have much teaching / commercial playing experience themselves, ie teenagers.
B. The going rate for a music teacher is recommended @ around £27 per hour presently (2008). If you find someone offering much cheaper lessons say £10 or £15 an hour, you have got to ask yourself, why are their lessons so cheap?
C. What is the teachers playing and teaching record like? Do they or have they, performed in respected local / national bands? Can they point to past pupil achievements and exam successes? Exams are far from a perfect indicator of a good teacher, but it can be helpful if their pupils have had a lot of success with examinations.
D. If you already have a teacher,is the teacher reliable? are the lessons structured or do they just amble along? Does the teacher leave you alone to get on with practising during your lesson? (this is not a good sign in my mind, the teacher should be in attendance for all of the lesson, within reason). Does the teacher bother to set you homework? Does the teacher give you a good variety of tasks to work on or just teach you exam test pieces to cram you for sitting exam grades? Is your teacher particular about your playing technique or does he / she just let you sit and hold your sticks just how you like, with no advice given?
E. Does the teacher teach a range of different instruments? ie keyboards, trumpet and the drums? If they do, they are unlikely to be an expert in any instrument, and especially not the drums!
A good teachers name will seem to crop up again and again. The shops will recommend them, other established drummers will recommend them and perhaps a friend of yours already has lessons with them. If the teacher tells you that you will have to go on a waiting list, it may be a disappointment in the short term but it is probably a good indicator that the teacher is a popular one.
** So where do the pupils that you teach come from Jim and how did most of them find you in the first place?
As I teach in Exeter and Exmouth plus at a leading Independent school in Taunton, most of my pupils live in those three general areas. However pupils do also travel in from Honiton,Cullompton, Crediton,Sidmouth,Seaton,Axminster,Tiverton, Wellington and Budleigh Salterton. If you are going to have regular weekly lessons with someone, you do need to be able to get there each time without travel being a major issue.
A few pupils find me via the internet, several have found me via the advertising in the shop I teach in. Several more have been referred to me by ex-pupils of mine and music teachers based in local schools. I am also proud of the fact that a lot of local working drummers recommend my name to potential pupils.
